The Guadalupe Homeless Project launched by Proyecto Pastoral over 20 years ago recently opened a new 15-bed women-only shelter in Boyle Heights. They saw a need for a safe-space in which Los Angeles women could lay their heads at night. On top of the hardship of homelessness, many women find it difficult to sleep at night for fear of sexual violence.
The facility focuses on the underserved population of older women who may find it more difficult to secure permanent housing as many businesses are hesitant to hire them due to age. The shelter is actually one of few in the county who have beds available to womeny only.
