VA settles suit, pledges to build housing for vets
February 9, 2015
Three years ago a veterans advocate group filed a lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs for what they felt was misuse of government land. The 387 acres of land in question are located in Brentwood and have until now been leased out for commercial purposes,
Last month, it was announced that the VA has settled the suit and would be nullifying its current leases to repurpose the land for veteran housing. While plans are just getting underway and not expected to be ready until October, the department has stated that they plan to have enough beds to house every homeless vet in Los Angeles. The intial focus will, however, be on serving the severely disbled, the aging and female vets.
The plan may also include the option to renovate existing buildings on the land and the possibility of including on-site services for drug and mental health counseling.
